About the Role We are looking for a detail oriented and disciplined Sales Tax & Bookkeeping Associate based in Colombia to join a U.S.-based accounting firm serving e-commerce clients.
This role will focus primarily on U.S. sales tax compliance, with a secondary focus on bookkeeping and accounting support.
You will work closely with a Senior Associate based in Miami, who will provide training, guidance, and review of your work.
This is a non client facing role, with your primary stakeholders being the internal accounting team and, when necessary, U.S. state tax authorities.
Role Breakdown
- ~50% U.S. Sales Tax
- ~50% Bookkeeping
- The workload may shift over time depending on business needs, projects, and development opportunities.
Key Responsibilities U.S. Sales Tax:
- Monitor and manage U.S. sales tax filing obligations for e-commerce clients across multiple states.
- Track sales tax nexus and filing requirements by state.
- Prepare, review, reconcile, and verify sales tax returns before submission.
- Work with sales tax platforms such as TaxJar, Avalara, or similar tools.
- Reconcile reported sales tax against underlying transaction data.
- Ensure returns are prepared and submitted accurately and on time.
- Coordinate with the Senior Associate to prioritize monthly filings, particularly during the high-volume period between the 1st and 20th of each month.
- Research and help resolve discrepancies, notices, and issues from U.S. state tax authorities.
- Access state tax websites securely when required to:
- Submit tax returns
- Download confirmations and reports
- Support compliance follow-up activities
Bookkeeping & Accounting Support
- Perform day-to-day bookkeeping using QuickBooks Online (QBO).
- Record, review, and reconcile accounting transactions.
- Ensure sales tax collected and other tax-related transactions are properly reflected in the books.
- Support accurate financial records for tax and advisory services.
- Assist with catch-up and bookkeeping cleanup projects.
- Connect sales tax filings with accounting records to ensure consistency between:
- Invoices
- Sales tax collected
- Filed returns
- Financial statements
Tools & Technology You will work regularly with:
- QuickBooks Online (QBO) – required
- TaxJar, Avalara, or similar sales tax platforms
- Karbon or similar practice management/workflow tools
- Cloud-based accounting and collaboration platforms
- Checklists and internal workflow systems
- AI tools used to support research, review, and accounting workflows
You should be comfortable learning new software quickly and following structured processes and quality-control procedures.
Collaboration & Work Environment
- Work closely with the Senior Associate and internal accounting team.
- Participate in regular check-ins to review priorities, progress, and potential issues.
- Follow established workflows, checklists, and quality-control procedures.
- Communicate issues proactively and flag discrepancies early.
- Participate in training, webinars, and process improvement activities during slower periods.
- Contribute ideas for improving accounting and compliance processes.
Requirements Must Haves Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related field.
- CPA/CTA certification is not required, but formal accounting training is required.
Experience:
- 2+ years of accounting experience.
- Experience working in an accounting firm or in roles involving bookkeeping and/or tax is preferred.
- Exposure to U.S. sales tax is strongly preferred, including experience with sales tax filings, registrations, or multi-state compliance.
Technical Skills:
- Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO) – required.
- QBO certification or substantial hands-on QBO experience.
- Strong reconciliation and accounting skills.
- Ability to work with multiple software platforms and learn new tools quickly.
- Comfortable following detailed processes, checklists, and quality-control procedures.
Language:
- Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken, to work effectively with a U.S.-based team and understand accounting and tax documentation.
- Spanish proficiency is expected.

Nice to Have
- Experience working with U.S. e-commerce clients, including Amazon, Shopify, or other marketplaces.
- Experience with TaxJar, Avalara, or similar sales tax software.
- Experience with Karbon or other accounting practice management platforms.
- Experience using Checkpoint or similar tax research tools.
- Previous experience working for a U.S.-based accounting or tax firm.
- Familiarity with AI tools for accounting research, review, and compliance support.
- Experience with multi-state U.S. sales tax compliance.
