Position summary
The CAM Programmer turns customer drawings and STEP files into proven, repeatable CNC programs. The role supports the office by giving the Production Coordinator the tool list, program and operation times
needed to quote a new part, and supports the shop by delivering programs that run safely and correctly on the first piece. The programmer works in MasterCam on both lathes (live tooling, C and Y axis) and mills (3-
axis, 3+2 and multi-axis), and keeps the program library in the ERP under each production so every job has one current, proven program.

Key responsibilities
Quote support
• Review each opportunity sent for programming: quantity, material, sales notes, drawings and STEP files.
• Choose the best machine for the job, meaning the one that needs the fewest operations.
• Create the MasterCam program for the lathe (live tooling, C and Y axis) or mill (3-axis, 3+2 or multi-axis),
and decide whether the job needs a jig or can use standard fixtures. Create the jig CAD when one is
needed.
• Decide whether new tools are required, select the tool, and create the product in Odoo. Otherwise use
standard tooling.
• Update the Bill of Materials in Odoo with the program, operation times and tool sheet so the Production
Coordinator can finish the quote.
• Flag any part that cannot be made as drawn (fixturing, reach, tolerance, material) before a quote goes
out.

Production support
• Post-process programs for the assigned machine and control, and keep tool and setup sheets current.
• Support the first piece: make the edits the Foreman requests, issue a new revision and update the BOM.
• Keep programs, tool sheets and times matched to the current drawing revision, and update the program
when a drawing changes.
• Get QC review when a program change affects tolerances or inspection.
  
Program library and revision control
• Keep the program library in the ERP (Odoo), with the program, tool sheet and times saved under each
production, with revision numbers and a record of what changed.
• Archive the final proven program, tool sheet and times in the ERP after the job is complete.
• Make sure the program on the production is always the current, proven revision.
  
Continuous improvement and daily
• Maintain the standard tool, holder and fixture library, and recommend speeds, feeds and fixtures.
• Recommend tooling or machine purchases that would cut cycle time, including what the planned new
machine makes possible.
• Attend the daily morning meeting and report programs ready, programs in progress and quote requests
waiting.
• Train a backup on the CAM software so programming is covered during absences.
  
Qualifications
Required
• [3+] years programming CNC mills and/or lathes in a job shop or similar environment.
• Strong working knowledge of MasterCam, including toolpaths, post-processing and 3D model work from
STEP files.
• Programming of CNC lathes with live tooling, C and Y axis.
• Programming of CNC mills: 3-axis, 3+2 and multi-axis.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T and tolerances.
• Solid knowledge of cutting tools, speeds and feeds, work holding and a range of materials.
• Comfortable with shop math and with CNC control G-code for edits at the machine.
• Able to work with the Foreman and machinists remotely during first-piece prove-out.
  
Assets
• CAD ability for designing jigs and fixtures.
• Experience with an ERP such as Odoo (products, BOMs, work orders).
  
Skills and qualities
• Careful and organized, with attention to detail and revision control.
• Clear communicator who works well across the office and the shop.
• Able to meet quote deadlines while keeping released jobs moving.
  
Working conditions
Work-from-home role. All programming is done remotely and stays in close contact with the Production
Coordinator and Foreman during quoting and first-piece prove-out. The programmer needs a reliable
computer, MasterCam access and a secure connection to the ERP, and works at a computer most of the day.
Shop safety rules apply on any visit to the shop. Urgent quote or prove-out requests may need a quick
turnaround; pay terms are to be confirmed.
